What is janumet XR?

JANUMET XR tablets contain two oral antidiabetic drugs used in the management of type 2 diabetes: sitagliptin and metformin hydrochloride extended-release. Janumet XR Tablet may be prescribed alone or along with other diabetes medications. JANUMET XR consists of an extended-release metformin core tablet coated with an immediate-release layer of sitagliptin.

Important Information About JANUMET XR

  • JANUMET XR (JAN-you-met XR) tablets contain sitagliptin (a drug of JANUVIA®) and extended-release metformin.
  • JANUMET or JANUMET XR can be used to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes along with diet and exercise.
  • Janumet or Janumet XR is not intended for use in patients with type 1 diabetes

USES

JANUMET XR( Sitagliptin/metformin) medication is used in people with type 2 diabetes with appropriate diet and exercise programs to control high blood sugar. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of organs, and sexual function problems

Limitations of Use

It is not intended for the treatment of patients with type 1 diabetes. It was not studied in patients with a history of pancreatitis.

How to use Janumet XR

Before you start using sitagliptin/metformin, you should read the medication guide and, if available, read the patient information sheet provided by your pharmacist. If you have any questions, do ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this medicine by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually with food once a day, preferably in the evening. Janumet is an extended-release tablet that does not crush or chew. Doing so increases the risk of its side effects. Also, do not divide the pills until your doctor or pharmacist asks you to do so. You have to swallow the whole pill without being crushed or chewed. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medicine unless directed by your doctor.

Remember if your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that this medicine is more beneficial for you than the risk of side effects. Serious side effects have not been seen on many people using this medicine.

Before taking this medicine

Adult Dosage

The JANUMET XR consists of an extended-release metformin core tablet coated with an immediate-release layer of sitagliptin. JANUMET XR is available in the form of a tablet containing

  • JANUMET XR 50mg / 500mg -- 64.25 mg sitagliptin phosphate monohydrate (equivalent to 50 mg sitagliptin as a free base) and 500 mg metformin hydrochloride extended-release (50 mg / 500 mg)
  • JANUMET XR 50mg/1000mg)--1000 mg metformin hydrochloride is available in the form of extended-release tablets(50 mg / 1000 mg).
  • Additionally, JANUMET XR is available for oral administration as tablets containing
    JANUMET XR 100mg/1000mg -- 128.5 mg sitagliptin phosphate monohydrate (equivalent to 100 mg sitagliptin as free base) and 1000 mg metformin hydrochloride extended-release (100 mg/1000 mg).

Children Dosage

Not established for people under 18 years.

JANUMET XR Contraindications in patients with

Severe renal impairment (eGFR <30mL/min/1.73m2). Acute or chronic metabolic acidosis,including diabetic.

How JANUMET XR works

Warnings

Tell your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms

  • Symptoms of respiratory tract infection including runny nose, sore throat, cough
  • upper respiratory tract infection
  • nausea and vomiting
  • headache
  • diarrhea
  • Indigestion, wind, stomach discomfort
  • Severe and persistent stomach pain
  • Cases of skin reaction called bullous pemphigoid that may require hospitalization have been reported in patients receiving JANUMET XR. Tell your doctor if you are developing blisters or breakage (erosion) of your skin. So your doctor may ask you to stop taking Janumet XR.

Risk of lactic acidosis

Janumet XR can cause a very rare, but very serious side effect called lactic acidosis, especially if your kidneys are not working properly.

Develop lactic acidosis with uncontrolled diabetes, severe infection, prolonged fasting or alcohol intake, dehydration, liver problems, and any medical condition in which the oxygen supply to one part of the body is reduced (eg acute severe heart disease) The risk of having it also increases.
